The Breakdown
Located just steps away from Downtown Muskegon, Hartshorn is Muskegon Lake’s only municipal marina. With two basins and a mooring field, Hartshorn has plenty to offer.
The main area of Hartshorn is the Large Boat Basin. This basin consists of a mixture of floating docks and fixed docks of various sizes. Slips at these docks can be reserved for the whole season through the City of Muskegon.
For sailors seeking a more ambitious method of mooring, just look to the offing. There you will find our Mooring Field. Sailing vessels ranging from 20′ to 60′ happily spend their summers secured to these buoys. Not available for transient stays, Mooring Buoys can be reserved for the whole season through the City of Muskegon. Dinghy storage racks as well as dinghy launches are found in a gated area separate from the large basin.
A bit of History
Using land donated by Hartshorn Curtain Roll Factory, the City of Muskegon developed Hartshorn Marina with the help of the Michigan State Waterways Commission. For over 50 years this marina has been dedicated to the boating community for the better enjoyment of Michigan’s water wonderland.
Fed by Muskegon River, Bear Creek, Ryerson Creek and Ruddiman Creek, Muskegon Lake played a large role in Muskegon’s early development. When the mouth of Muskegon River was knows as ‘The Lumber Queen of the World’, the logging industry used Muskegon River to float their timber from inland sites to Muskegon Lake where there were over 40 sawmills. Today, as the largest natural deep-water port in West Michigan, commercial shipping moves over one million tons of cargo each year over this lake.

What makes Hartshorn the best?
We do our best to keep things in ship-shape and Bristol fashion, but our facilities alone do not make this place what it is. Its you that makes us stand apart from other marinas. Our customers are the best a marina could ask for. So many friendships are created and nurtured at our docks and it is a privilege each year to watch.
The atmosphere at Hartshorn is hard and fast above reproach, and it wouldn’t be possible without our boaters!
